Do you know the symptoms of a traumatic brain injury? Many people are unable to identify the symptoms of a brain injury because there are so many factors to consider. The symptoms can be similar to those caused by strokes and other health problems.

Concussion symptoms can take a while to manifest. Some symptoms appear right after an event such a vehicle collision, but others not until weeks or months later. Mild Traumatic Brain Injury

  • Loss of consciousness, even for a short period of time
  • Dazed, confused or disoriented
  • Sensory problems: light and sound sensitivity, blurred vision, ringing in ears, bad taste in the mouth, change to sense of smell
  • Loss of balance
  • Headache, nausea or vomiting
  • Memory or focus problems
  • Mood changes or mood swings (manic depression)
  • Depression and anxiety (including panic attacks)
  • Sleep imbalance: unable to sleep or sleeping more than usual

Moderate to Severe Traumatic Brain Injury

  • Slurred speech
  • Loss of consciousness, even for a short period of time
  • Headache that becomes increasingly worse
  • Difficulty balancing and/or loss of coordination
  • Sleep imbalance: unable to sleep, sleeping more than usual,l or inability to wake up
  • Weakness or numbness in fingers and toes
  • Clear fluids draining from the nose or ears
  • Dilation of one or both pupils of the eyes
  • Unusual behavior: significant confusion, combativeness or agitation
  • Nausea, vomiting, convulsions or seizures

Children’s symptoms

  • Depression
  • Irritability, persistent crying and inability to be consoled
  • Change in sleep habits
  • Loss of interest in favorite toys or activities
  • Change in eating or nursing habits
  • Loss of focus
